John Lloyd, Age 34

John was another Dawley lad who having been born at Dawley Green had moved away from the area and was living with his wife Sarah at 124 Coke Street, Mansfield at the time of his enlistment. His parents John and Sarah had also left Dawley by the time of the First War and had set up home in Darlaston.

John had worked at the Langwith colliery after moving to the area. After enlisting he had seen action in Gallipoli before arriving on the Western Front.

On the 26th September 1916 his battalion attacked at Thiepval which had been ear marked to have been captured on July 1st but still held out. The attack had three objectives each of which were captured; unfortunately, John fell during this fighting.

John was killed during the battle of the Somme on September 26th 1916, his body was never recovered and his name is found on the Thiepval Memorial on Pier and Face 10C - 10D
